Steve Womack’s Response to Passage of the So-Called Health Care “Reform” Bill

Today’s passage of the Senate Democrat bill, H.R. 3490 is a disaster for America. Health care should be just that- caring. This bill does everything except put our people’s health care needs first. The hasty push by President Obama, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Leader Harry Reid to get this legislation forced through Congress for the Democratic party’s political gain is shameful and completely disregards the foundations upon which our country was founded.
House and Senate Democrats have used “smoke and mirrors” to hide the true costs and the negative effects of this legislation on all of us. We have had a bill crammed down our throats that puts Washington in charge of our health care. The deal-making and gimmicks that have defined this entire process should serve as a sign this bill is bad for America and cannot possibly improve the human condition without contributing significantly to the nation’s deficit.

When estimating the costs of this legislation, the Congressional Budget Office and the Joint Committee on Taxation estimate this bill will put a new multi-billion dollar tax burden on Arkansans. In addition, another $60 billion tax will be placed on health insurance providers that will be passed on to consumers through higher premiums.

In this economy we don’t need more money coming out of our pockets, we need to do everything we can to keep it! This legislation isn’t reform, it’s a poor attempt to get the American people’s “buy in” to a government-run health care takeover. When you elect me to Congress, I promise to work diligently for REAL health care reform. WE CAN work to provide affordable premiums. WE CAN make sure our small businesses have access to lower health care costs just like corporations and labor unions. WE CAN enhance health savings accounts. I WILL work to do all of these without creating a massive tax burden on the people of Northwest Arkansas.
